Creative Direction / AI / Film
Project East Village is a short film following the interwoven lives of nine individuals on a single square block in the East Village. Using original ideas and concepts, I'm utilizing AI as a tool to help with character development, scene building, initial dialogue, storyboarding, and more.

Below is a look into my process

Character Development
Bodega Owner Example
LOOK AND FEEL
Initially using a long list of possible character types, I used AI to give me various looks for each. From there I brought them to life using Veo to get a quick read on personality and movement.
CONTEXT
From there I utitlized Gemini to build descrptions, backgrounds, personality types, and histories of each character. This gave me a great starting point to refine and adapt the characters to the interactions they might have.

RAFI: THE LOCAL BODEGA OWNER

Rafi is the steadfast owner and sole operator of a small, no-frills bodega nestled in the heart of the East Village. His establishment is not merely a convenience store; it is a time capsule and a community hub, reflecting both the gritty past and the gentrified present of his neighborhood. A man who has mastered his small kingdom, his face, etched with the subtle lines of a life lived and observed, holds a mixture of gentle knowledge and knowing watchfulness.
HISTORY: THE MAN AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Rafi's story is inextricably linked to the history of the East Village. He was born and raised in an apartment just a few blocks from his current shop. The bodega, originally a small grocery store, was established by his parents when the neighborhood was a melting pot of immigrant families, artists, and working-class residents. He grew up sweeping the floors, stocking the shelves, and learning the rhythms of the community from his father.

He has witnessed the dramatic transformation of his neighborhood firsthand. He remembers the days of punk rock and dive bars, the turbulent era of squatters, and the vibrant artistic movements of the 1980s. He saw the change slowly creep in, first with the arrival of new, polished storefronts and then with a steady influx of residents who were more interested in artisanal coffee than a dollar cup of his father's brew. His shop has survived by remaining stubbornly itself, a beacon of authenticity in a sea of trendy, fleeting businesses. It is a testament to his resilience and his deep-seated loyalty to the community he serves.
PERSONALITY: A PILLAR OF THE COMMUNITY

Rafi is a man of few words but sharp observation. His personality is defined by a quiet pragmatism and a dry, understated sense of humor. He knows the residents of his block by their first names and their regular orders. He is the keeper of small secrets and the bearer of quiet wisdom, often offering a nod of advice or a knowing glance to those who stop in for a quick chat.

Script Beat Sheet

Refined Beat Sheet →
Using the characters I've refined, I prompted Gemini to give me a beat sheet for an outline of the script.

The Prompt:
"Create a beat sheet for the following short film idea: Based in the East Village, this film tells the story of 9 strangers in the east village nyc. The story is told using each character via a narrative handoff approach as each character interacts with another. The story begins with Mave, a grad student in her apartment and includes the following characters: Josh a bartender, Rafi a bodega owner, Margie a flower shop owner, Jose a food cart owner, Juan a deliver cyclist, Vera a long time resident, Fiona a writer, and Mike a road construction worker. The film run time should be around 30 -40 minutes"
The result was usable as a good starting point tying each character together in a quick way. I used this as a template and make adjustments to how I wanted each character to interact as well as the order of interactions.

SCENE 1: MAVE (5 minutes)
Opening Image: A slow, contemplative shot of Mave's East Village apartment, filled with books and a half-written thesis. The sound of a busy street is a constant hum in the background. She is talking on the phone to a friend mentioning she is struggling with writer's block. She decides to take a break, leaving her apartment to clear her head. Handoff: Mave walks past the coffee cart and gives Jose a friendly wave and says hi

SCENE 2: JOSE (4 minutes)
New Character Arc: The focus shifts to Jose. We see the meticulous care he puts into his cart and his interactions with various customers. He is content but tired. He serves a customer with a fresh coffee and croissants. Handoff: Juan, the delivery cyclist, pulls up to Jose's cart. He's late for a delivery and quickly grabs an order, tosses it in his bag and speeds off.

SCENE 3: JUAN (4 minutes)
New Character Arc: We follow Juan as he weaves through traffic. He rounds the block and pulls up to a residential building. Handoff: Juan arrives at his destination, a residential building where a tired Mike, the construction worker, is taking a break on the steps of a residential building. Juan hands off a food order to a resident and rushes off.

SCENE 4: MIKE (4 minutes)
New Character Arc: We join Mike as he eats his sandwich. His coworkers are all around smoking cigarettes and eating their lunches. He sees a long-time resident, Vera, coming out of a neighboring building. Handoff: Mike gives a respectful nod to Vera as she passes, carrying her empty grocery bags.

SCENE 5: VERA (4 minutes)
New Character Arc: The story now follows Vera, as she slowly makes her way to the market. She smiles at neighbors and the familiar storefronts she has known for decades. Handoff: As Vera passes Margie’s flower shop, she stops to admire the vibrant display of flowers. Margie sees her and steps outside to give her a small bouquet, a gesture of their long-standing friendship.

SCENE 6: MARGIE (4 minutes)
New Character Arc: We get a glimpse into Margie's life as a flower shop owner. She is joyful and passionate about her work. After giving the flowers to Vera, she sets up flowers on the bench outside her shop and begins to water the other plants. Handoff: Rafi, the bodega owner, stops by Margie's shop on his way to his store. They chat briefly about the weather and the neighborhood before he heads on his way.

SCENE 7: RAFI (4 minutes)
New Character Arc: Rafi returns to his bodega next door, and checks in with an employee behind the register. He steps behind the deli counter and washes up. He is a steady, reassuring presence in the community. Handoff: The local writer, Fiona, enters the bodega to buy some gum. Rafi says hi and they chat as long time neighborhood friends.

SCENE 8: FIONA (4 minutes)
New Character Arc: The focus shifts to Fiona, a writer in search of inspiration. We see her leave the bodega and begin walking down the street turning the corner. Handoff: Fiona walks into the local bar where Josh, the bartender, is meticulously setting up for the evening. Fiona takes a seat at the bar, orders a drink, and pulls out her notebook to write.

SCENE 9: JOSH (4 minutes)
New Character Arc: The focus shifts to Josh, the bartender. He is a master of his craft, preparing the bar for the rush of the night. He swiftly makes a drink and chats with the barback. Final Scene and Resolution: The film ends with a quiet handoff. The camera shifts to reveal Mave sitting at the other end of the bar as Josh hands her a drink. Mave says thank you.
Storyboarding
Using ImageFX and gemini I started feeding in prompts for initial scene creation in a storyboard style. This gives me the ability to explore a broader range of settings including people, places, and secondary elements. From there I used Nano Banana to refine the scene with additional edits helping me to refine and narrow in the details I want in each scene.
